SF Barbers Are Real Artists; Here’s Why…
Despite all the negative news about San Francisco, the city by the bay is still where creativity is as rich as the coffee brewing in the heart of North Beach. As an SF native and barber born and raised, San Francisco has allowed me to see this city's diversity, especially in personal style and fashion. But did you know your hair is not just about style but is a canvas for personal expression for San Francisco Barbers like myself?
Understanding Hair as a Medium of Art
If you ask me what's the most fascinating part of my job, it's witnessing the transformation of an ordinary head of hair into a walking masterpiece. For me, when a client sits in my chair, I know I have a chance to provide not only excellent customer service but a chance to use my creativity on their haircut that can help them get a date, feel confident on job interviews, and stand out at a bar on Polk street.
One of my favorite clients is tourists visiting SF and wanting to experience the city's local barber shops. People visit the Golden Gate Bridge worldwide, watch the San Francisco Giants games, and explore the city's nightlife. They are not anticipating getting the best haircut they have ever received. The feeling of bringing joy to others with my art form wakes me up in the morning; I get creative with the Fades, Undercuts, and Comb-Overs, and my clients love me for it.
In-depth Look into Different Hair Types
Like an artist who appreciates different mediums, I respect and enjoy the beauty of all hair types. Whether straight as an arrow, wavy like the bay, curly like Lombard Street, or coiled like a well-earned San Francisco sourdough pretzel, every hair type presents a unique opportunity for artistic expression.
As a Barber, I have always prioritized cutting different hair types; San Francisco is one of the most diverse cities in the US. I wanted to expand who I could connect with through my art, so I spent years practicing and perfecting every type of haircut. I had to learn what clippers work better for a specific hair type, how different ethnic groups communicate with barbers and hair stylists, and how different hair textures have different outcomes for a particular hairstyle.
A Highlight of Different Haircut Styles for Men
When it comes to different haircut styles for men, there are so many to choose from, and each one can dramatically change your look and vibe. My favorite haircut style is a fade. A faded haircut is a famous men's hairstyle that has stood the test of time due to its clean, sharp, and versatile look. As the name suggests, a faded haircut involves a gradual transition from short to long hair. This transition, or fade, can occur anywhere on the head but typically starts at the natural hairline and ends with very short or shaved hair around the ears and back of the neck.
My second favorite haircut is a Comb-Over Haircut. A comb-over haircut is a timeless, versatile hairstyle that suits various ages, face shapes, and personal styles. The classic version involves growing the hair on one side of the head longer and combing it over the top to cover a bald spot or hairline. However, the modern comb-over is much more style-driven and can be worn by anyone, even those with a full head of hair. It typically features shorter sides with longer hair on top, combed to one side, creating a noticeable part.
Exploring the Tools of the Trade
I need scissors, razors, and clippers like a painter's brushes. Each tool allows me to meticulously craft a cut that fits the unique head it's serving. A careful snip here, a precise buzz there - it's all a dance between my tools and your hair, culminating in the final artful look.
Here is a list of my go-to tools when I am behind the barber chair:
1. Andis Slimline Pro Liners
2. Oster Fast Feed Clippers
3. Wahl Cordless Magic Clips
4. Straight Razor (followed by a hot towel)
The Role of the Barber as an Artist
As a barber, my job is not to just cut your hair and send you out the door. My job is first to make you feel comfortable with me being your service provider. I always start by letting new clients know I have been cutting hair for 10+ years, showing them images of haircuts I've done for others, and asking if I can give them a drink of water. Second, I make sure they know which type of hairstyle they would like; when the client is not certain, I present them with haircut styles that go well with the shape of their head and personality. Third, while cutting my client's hair, I use the time I have them in my chair to get to know them; I ask how their day has been thus far and learn from them as much as possible.
